The M’Chigeeng First Nation is one of the six Anishinaabe communities on Manitoulin Island, Ontario, Canada. It has a population of about 2,600 people, of which 900 live on the reserve. The M’Chigeeng First Nation occupies a land base of 4,548 hectares on the north shore of West Bay. The name M’Chigeeng means “place of many swamps” in the Ojibwe language. The M’Chigeeng First Nation is governed by a chief and four councillors who are elected every two years. The community has a rich cultural heritage and offers various services and programs to its members and visitors.
