The Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte First Nation (MBQ) are a Mohawk community located in southeastern Ontario, Canada. They are part of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, also known as the Six Nations or the Iroquois. The MBQ have a rich history and culture that dates back to the time of the Great Peacemaker, who united the original five nations under a common law and constitution. The MBQ are descendants of the Fort Hunter Mohawks, who lived in the Mohawk Valley in present-day New York State until the American Revolution. As allies of the British Crown, they were forced to leave their ancestral lands and settle in Upper Canada, where they received a land grant along the Bay of Quinte. Today, the MBQ control the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory, which covers 7,362.5 hectares (18,193 acres) of land and has a population of about 9,875 people . The MBQ have their own elected council, administration, and social services, and they are actively involved in preserving and promoting their language, culture, traditions, knowledge, and history.
